In this workshop the work will focus on the acquisition of theatrical and vocal techniques deeply rooted in the frame of physical theatre, as well as their application in performative and social contexts, building a thematic, physical and creative bridge with Unlocking, a project Jubilo has been developing since 2015 under the auspices of the Grotowski Institute and in collaboration with penitentiary institutions in Poland and abroad.

‘I am. Community’ is one of the workshop sessions prepared and developed by the Jubilo Foundation in collaboration with the Grotowski Institute. It is dedicated to different areas of Jubilo’s theater practice, where workshop participants will be able to experience and learn the full spectrum of methods used in the work of the group

Jubilo will share with the participants exercises and training elements used by the company during the development of their theatre work and artistic practice within the prison environment. The main focus will be given to Ensemble based practices, work on body/voice techniques, partnership elements and etude composition. In addition to elements strictly correlated with actor training, we will focus on how to lead and apply theatrical techniques in non-theatrical environments (i.e. prisons, refugee camps, with people with physical and mental disabilities). Jubilo leaders will accompany the group in a process of exploration, development, analysis and acquisition of personal exercises, supporting the participant’s process of becoming a future leader of work.

During the development of the session, the participants will have open discussions with the group and the workshop leaders concerning criticities and solutions connected to the work of the leader as well as questions related to the methodologies of the company.

Technical elements developed in the workshops:

  • ensemble work: physical and spatial awareness, action/reaction, flow;
  • partnership exercises: listening and relation, trust exercises, rhythm and relation;
  • body/voice work: work on breath, grounding, work on sound and common harmonies, basic elements of polyphonic singing;
  • composition: exploration, composition and devising of physical etude;
  • leading: Proposal and leading of personal exercises, construction of a common session with the group, observation of Jubilo’s methodology, common discussion;
  • elements of relaxation and visualization.

The workshop is aimed at theatre operators, i.e. actors, directors, performers, creators, cultural animators, educators, and all people interested in deepening their knowledge and experience in the area of theatre work in environments at risk of exclusion.
