Siegfried in Bern

On 14 April, the Bern Opera (Bühnen Bern) will stage the premiere of"Siegfried" ("Siegfried") directed by Ewelina Marciniak - the third part of the of Richard Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelung" tetralogy.

In recent years, Ewelina Marciniak has made herself known to audiences as a director, who gives a voice to women on stage, presenting her heroines in their struggle for self-determination in a world dominated by men. Also in Valkyrie, which was staged in Bern a year ago, she highlights in the dramatic layer the rebellion of the of a daughter against her father's laws and plans. In Siegfried, on the other hand, we are primarily dealing primarily with a series of male characters, all centred around the young title character.

"Siegfried is a fascinating character. We meet him before he has even fully discoveredhimself as an adult male and has developed his masculine identity according to established patterns. His world is not divided into what is 'masculine' and what is'female'. We meet a boy who dreams of adventure and exploring the world. And that includes the adventure of self-discovery." – says director about her latest play.

Ewelina Marciniak was accompanied in the production of the play by a group of established creators. Miron Hakenbeck was responsible for dramaturgy, as in the previous parts of the tetralogywas the responsibility of Miron Hakenbeck. The set design was by Mirek Kaczmarek, and the costumes by Julia Kornacka. The production team was joined by Mikołaj Karczewski, whoprepared the choreography.
