Ewelina Marciniak with the premiere in Salzburg

Ewelina Marciniak, the author of one of the two most important theater premieres at this year's Salzburg Festival. The second - "Ingolstadt" - is being prepared by the famous Belgian Ivo van Hove. On the other hand, the Pole is preparing the play "Iphigenia", in which she will use Eurypideus and Goethe's dramas prepared by Joanna Bednarczyk.

She wants to show a different type of heroine from the dominant women in the history of literature, destined for love and suffering. He would also like to answer the question of who Iphigenia would be today.

The premiere of the show will take place on August 18 and will be played eight times. Then he will appear on the stage of the production's co-producer - Thalia Theater in Hamburg. The director works with her permanent crew: set designer Mirek Kaczmarek, costume designer Julia Kornacka, composer Jan Duszyński, choreographer Dominika Knapik.

Polish tenor Piotr Beczała has been present in Salzburg for almost 20 years, this time he will perform as Radames in Verdi's "Aida". He had a Metropolitan debut in this role already, but a pandemic thwarted his plans. The New York City Theater has closed.

The author of this staging is the operatic debutant Shirin Neshat, an Iranian woman who has lived in the USA for many years, an excellent photographer, creator of award-winning video installations and films. She found contemporary themes in Verdi's opera, which she has been dealing with for years - the situation of women in the Arab world, refugees, life in a foreign country - but she showed them differently than others. The premiere of her "Aida" took place in Salzburg in 2017, but Shirin Neshat announces changes in the staging.
