The play tells the story of a group of New York gays living at the time of the violent AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, with Raegan’s conservative government in power. Sexual identity, politics and ideology, racial and social issues, and religion form the fabric of this many-threaded epic story in which fictional characters mingle with historical figures.
Tony Kushner’s magnificent text is a striking analysis of the American soul, raised in Warlikowski’s staging to the status of a universal vision of love in a time of cholera, homoerotic love that brings out the evil dormant in each of us.
There are plenty of angels in this play. I try my best to understand them. Here we have beings whose nature is to love. They have fallen from heaven and got tarnished in the street. This is the kind of angels I believe in. I’m more interested in their souls than in the American reality they live in. I observe their lives and it turns out that, as I’ve expected, they have the same kind of problems as people all over the world – Krzysztof Warlikowski.
