Jan Klata and the William Shakespeare's story of love
The musical Romeo and Juliet directed by Jan Klata is a staging of one of William Shakespeare's most famous dramas, telling the love story of two young people who come from rival families. The drama was written in the 16th century, but its timeless message allows for new and original interpretations. This will be the case in our staging, which will resonate with the intricate human relationships that have divided societies and communities for centuries.
The work of the English playwright focuses on the conflict of the feuding families, the Capulets and the Montecchi, and the love story of two of their representatives. Romeo Montecchi meets Juliet at her family's party and falls in love at first sight. At this point, the young lovers' affection is put to a great test, to which Romeo and Juliet's loved ones will also be subjected. In Jan Klata's adaptation, the conflict of two families, resulting in polarisation, comes to the fore. Can a relationship between two people develop and survive in such conditions? Is intimacy in love, untainted by the expectations and opinions of loved ones, possible? The story and the finale of Romeo and Juliet's love are well known, but the above questions have been gaining momentum ever since the famous drama was written.
Jan Klata, director of the production said:
This is the third time I'm directing a production at the Capitol, I really enjoy coming back here, I have a lot of respect for this company. In our production of Romeo and Juliet, we try to read what the author wrote. We try to tell the story in a universal way, so the action takes place neither in Ukraine nor in Gaza, yet of course it takes place everywhere. We avoid literalness of place and era. We are encouraged to do so by the poetic nature of Shakespeare's text and the musical convention. In the real world, hardly anyone sings when dying, nor have I heard of a vegetable decoction that only puts you to death for 42 hours. I don't want to give away the details of this staging, I can assure you that care is being taken to make it attractive, after all, the actors will be performing this show for an audience of 700.
Jan Klata is responsible for developing William Shakespeare's text and directing Romeo and Juliet. The music is composed by Endy Yden. The set and costumes will be designed by Mirek Kaczmarek, choreography will be created by Macieko Prusak and video projections by Natan Berkowicz.
