MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Although today MADAMA BUTTERFLY is considered one of the greatest opera hits of Giacomo Puccini, along with TOSCA and LA BOHÈME, its premiere at the La Scala was a fiasco. The love duet in Act I was booed. When Cio-Cio San began to sing about robins building nests, the audience responded with such laughter that the performance was almost broken. Nowadays it is probably the biggest melodrama among operas a real tearjerker. The story of a geisha in love deceived and Left behind who cannot Live without honour so she dies with honour. The work is full of dramatic music with moving arias sung by the main character. Although the story contains not only paper umbrellas but also cardboard characters, the first bars of the “Un bel di” aria is enough to forgive Puccini everything; he knew intuitively that the Far Eastern mood will perfectly work on the stage and will delight the audience by exoticism and uniqueness.
