Polish artists working at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich

The Munich Opera has continuously collaborated with Polish artists . Krzysztof Warlikowski directs Janáček’s “Káťa Kabanová”. This year in August, the Salzburg Festival will host the premiere of Mieczysław Weinberg’s “The Idiot” directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. The musical director of the show is Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The cast features Jerzy Butryn.

In March 2025, Warlikowski will premiere of “Káťa Kabanová” by Leoš Janáček at the Bayerische Staatsoper, also conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. For the last 15 years, the Polish director has regularly collaborated with the Munich theater, where he has produced: “Eugene Onegin”, “Salome”, “The Woman Without a Shadow” and “Tristan and Isolde”, among others. In the she same year, Warlikowski directs Richard Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris (opening in May 2025) with Henrik Nánási conducting on the podium.

The director works with set and costume designer Małgorzata Szczęśniak and choreographer Claude Bardouil on all of the above productions. The Bayerische Staatsoper also revives Warlikowski’s productions of “Le Grand Macabre” by Ligeti and “Dido and Aeneas… Erwartung” by Purcell/Schönberg. Other revival with a Polish contribution is Donizetti “Lucia di Lammermoor”, directed by Barbara Wysocka.

Piotr Beczała sings Don José in “Carmen” and the titular Lohengrin in Wagner’s opera. The Polish tenor also performs at the beginning of the season in the “Opera for All” event at the Festspielhaus Oberammergau.

Andrzej Filończyk appears as Silvio in the new production of “Pagliacci” by Leoncavallo. Aside from that, the baritone will be heard in the role of Belcore in the revival of Donizetti’s “Les d’Amore”.

Paweł Horodyski (member of the opera studio) performs in “The Moon” by Orff, “Tosca” by Puccini, “Macbeth” by Verdi, “Manon Lescaut” by Puccini. Daria Proszek returns to the Munich stage in Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades”.
