Sasha Waltz and Romeo and Juliet

Dramatic symphony/ballet. Premiere as part of the XXVII Łódź Ballet Festival. A production of the Paris National Opera. The work is being carried out in the original, French language version.

Creating the choreography for Romeo and Juliet, Sasha Waltz turned to one of the most poignant love stories in world literature. The tale of star-crossed lovers, whose families are enemies, and whose deaths bring understanding and reconciliation, is one of Shakespeare's most famous works. This dark tragedy inspired Hector Berlioz to compose the dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet for three soloists, two large choruses, and orchestra. During the world premiere in 2007, stars Aurélie Dupont and Hervé Moreau danced the lovers who found each other only in death. In the fall of 2012, the Romeo and Juliet production joined the repertoire of Milan's La Scala.

In April 2015, the premiere of Romeo and Juliet took place in Berlin as a co-production of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Scala in Milan, and Sasha Waltz & Guests. There, for the first time, the choreography was danced by the dancers of the Sasha Waltz & Guests ensemble. Currently, Sasha Waltz is preparing this production with the ballet ensemble of the Grand Theatre in Łódź.
